Check out how you can avoid animals on the road!
From blossoming foliage to fawns and ducklings, Spring season is a time for new life. But all this new life means trouble on the road. Accidents involving run-ins with wildlife are more common than you may think. One in 17 car accidents are related to an encounter with wildlife. Not only do these accidents put animals at risk, but they can seriously injure you and any passengers too as well as cause costly damage to your vehicle. Make sure that you’re prepared for a wildlife run-in on the road with these tips to avoid animals.
- Pay attention to the signs. These warnings are present for a reason. In areas with high wildlife traffic, these signs are meant to keep you vigilant. When you see an animal-crossing sign be sure to slow down.
- Time of day matters. Be more alert in the early morning and the evening. Animals tend to be more active during these times which increases the likelihood of spotting wildlife on the road. Make sure to drive extra carefully during these hours.
- Keep an eye on the shoulders. While an animal may not be directly on the road, it’s still important to pay attention to animals near the road. While it may seem that they’re safe from harms way, you never know when they may dart across the street. Be sure to keep a watchful eye out.
- Don’t swerve. While you want to do your best to avoid roadside wildlife, it isn’t always the best option. Swerving to avoid a deer may have you colliding head-on with another vehicle which can lead to greater damage. It’s best to break and honk to try to get the animal out of the way.
When driving on the road this season, be sure you’re covered with the right
car insurance.
