Minimize your water waste with these conservation tips.
We’re hoping that the coming El Niño will bring California some much needed rain, but as we wait for those storms we’re reminded of our current ongoing drought. Years into it, fire hazard and water restrictions are high and it falls to each of us to do our part to save water.
We want to help you preserve this precious resource, so here are a few tips for conserving water at home.
- Avoid Shower Waste: Do you know how many gallons you waste while you wait for the shower to heat up? Stop letting all that water go down the drain by putting a few large buckets in your shower. Use this water for your plants, and you can keep them green without hitting water restrictions. Also, keep your shower to five minutes or less.
- Use Your Dishwasher: Doing your dishes by hand uses significantly more water than running a full load through your dishwasher. You can save even more water by scraping, rather than rinsing, dishes before you load them in.
- Fix Your Leaks: Even if you haven’t noticed any obvious leaks, your house can still have hidden ones. Check your meter, wait for two hours during which you don’t use any water, then check it again. If it’s changed, you have a hidden leak. Check your toilet for the leak first by putting a little food coloring in your tank. If the color ends up in your bowl without flushing, you’ve got a leak.
