Smart Suggestions for Avoiding Holiday Hangovers

Try out these tips for avoiding a hangover this holiday season.

With the holidays right around the corner, you probably have a ton of holiday gatherings coming up.  Because parties usually mean alcohol, it's important to moderate yourself.  Minimizing your alcohol intake is the only surefire way to avoid a hangover the next morning.  But what happens if you want to let loose a little?  Well, try out these tips for avoiding a hangover this holiday season.
  • Avoid Drinks with High Levels of Congeners
Congeners are toxic chemicals that are by-products of making alcohol.  Studies have shown that alcoholic drinks that contain high levels of congeners seen to increase both the frequency and intensity of hangovers.  Alcohols that have high levels of congeners include whiskey, cognac, tequila, and bourbon.  However, colorless alcohols like vodka, gin, and rum have low levels of congeners.  If you want to avoid a nasty hangover, then try sticking to drinks with these alcohols.
  • Chase Your Drinks with Water
Alcohol is a diuretic, and drinking too much can actually lead to dehydration.  While dehydration doesn't necessarily cause hangovers, it can make symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and dry mouth way worse.  Fortunately, dehydration is an easy problem to fix.  Just make sure to drink water between drinks and have a large glass of water before going to bed.  This should help you alleviate some of the more intense hangover symptoms.
  • Eat a Big Breakfast
Hangovers can be associated with hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels.  Oftentimes, people who suffer from low blood sugar have far worse hangover symptoms than those with normal blood sugar levels.  To keep your sugar levels up, experts recommend eating a meal after a night of drinking or eating a big breakfast the morning after.  While you may not feel up to eating the morning after a party, do your best to eat a nutritious meal, and your symptoms may start to decrease.
