Saving Water In Your Garden
How To Save Water During California’s Severe Drought As more and more restrictions are being put in place as our beautiful state continues to suffer from severe drought conditions, it is important for homeowners with a green thumb to learn about ways they can help to lessen the effects. We are not suggesting allowing your favorite vegetable garden dwindle; rather, simply learning to be water-wise in your garden so that California does not have to feel the effects as much. Keep these important tips in mind for going green in your home garden. Water-Wise Garden Tips For Homeowners:
  • Whenever planting anything new, be sure to consider its location. You will want to try to place new plants away from slopes to avoid wasteful run off and in any area with a diversity of sun and shade. Most plants prefer microclimates.
  • Is your soil retaining enough water? As a gardener, it is important to understand your soil’s components. If the soil is not retaining enough water, you may need to add organic matter either before the season arrives or after harvest.
  • Make sure to bundle plants with other green matter that shares similar water needs. This will help you maximize your water usage and allow your plants to enjoy the most benefits.
  • Are you utilizing mulch? If you need to reduce evaporation, you can use mulch to insulate your soil to avoid excess water use. We recommend using bark products or plastic sheeting for your mulch.
  • Homeowners who still use sprinklers may be wasting more water than necessary. Replacing your sprinkler system with efficient drip systems or soaker hoses can help to save water.
We hope these helpful water-wise tips allow you to relieve the pressure our beautiful state is feeling from drought conditions! Serving Chino Hills, Seal Beach, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and the rest of California, contact Fuller Insurance for all of your insurance needs.
