Dos and Don’ts for Your Auto Insurance Claim

What you should and shouldn't do when filing an auto insurance claim.

Many drivers do not know what to do when it comes to filing a claim with their auto insurance in Los Angeles, California.  While the whole process may seem overwhelming, it's actually pretty straightforward so long as you know what you should and shouldn't do.  Here are some of the dos and don'ts of car insurance claims. DO:
  • Review Your Policy- Before calling your insurance provider, make sure you take the time to review your auto insurance policy. This way, you go in knowing what types of coverage you have.  Taking this step will ensure that you are not surprised if your insurer explains that they will not cover certain costs.  So, before calling your insurer to report the claim, look over your policy and compile a list of coverage questions, so you are ready to work with your claims adjuster.
  • Take Pictures and Save Receipts- Having pictures of your car's damage as well as the location where the accident took place will be a major help to your claim. If you need to tow your car, rent a car, or make other purchases related to the claim, then make sure that you save these receipts as your insurance might cover these costs.  Presenting photo evidence along with purchase receipts will help speed up your claims process while simultaneously ensure that you get all the coverage that you need.
DON'T:
  • Wait to Call Your Insurer- It's important to call your insurer and file your claim as soon as possible. This ensures that you can remember details accurately, so your claims adjuster gets the full picture.  Additionally, most auto insurance policies include a clause that requires car owners to report claims "promptly."  Usually, this means reporting claims within 24-hours of the incident or risk losing coverage.
  • Place Blame or Admit Fault- When filing your claim, it's important that you recount the details as accurately as possible without placing blame or accepting fault. It is up to the police and your insurance company to determine who, if anyone, was at fault for the accident.  So, avoid letting your own opinion bias your account of the incident and let your insurance company conduct their own investigation.
These are some of the dos and don'ts of filing a car insurance claim.  Do you have additional questions about your auto insurance in Los Angeles, California?  If so, then contact the experts at Fuller Insurance Agency in Southern California for assistance today.
