Celebrating Earth’s Global Holiday
A Few Ideas For Celebrating International Earth Day
You do not have to wait until April to set aside a day for celebrating and caring for our planet. While Earth Day, as celebrated by the United States, does not happen until next month International Earth Day is just around the corner. This holiday is celebrated by the global community on the Spring Equinox, which falls on March 20th. Here are a few ways you can celebrate this International Holiday.
• Go Green At Home: You do not have to install solar panels and dig your own well to set your home on the path to improved energy efficiency. Switch your incandescent bulbs for CFL or LED bulbs, turn your water heater down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and switch out your household cleaners for non-toxic varieties. These small changes can make a big difference.
• Go Paperless: You can go paperless in more ways than just your billing (although it is estimated that if everyone signed up for online billing we could save a staggering 19 million trees a year!). Invest in non-disposable grocery bags and get in the habit of bringing them to the store. Also, switch from a tangible newspaper to reading your news online.
• Go Local: Buying your produce from your local farmers’ market has multiple benefits. First, the fresh produce will be great for your family’s health. Secondly, you support local growers who are committed to maintaining the land in your community. Finally, you reduce your carbon footprint because you are not buying produce that was shipped across the world, opting for produce that came to you by less than a gallon of gas.
