3 Tips to Help You Stay Safe on the Roads After Dark

Learn how you can drive safely at nighttime.

As we inch closer to winter, the sun sets earlier and earlier.  This means that many California drivers may find that their afternoon commutes are now taking place after dark.  When driving in the dark, it's important that you employ extra precautions for your safety and the safety of other drivers.  Here are three tips that you should employ to drive safely at nighttime. 1) Use Your Headlights While it might seem obvious, many drivers fail to use their headlights properly when driving at night.  For instance, some drivers forget to switch on their lights at all, while others take it to the other extreme and use their high-beams.  You should turn on your car's headlights as soon as daylight starts to fade.  Not only does this help you see, but it helps others see your vehicle as well.  For high-beams, you should never use them while you are sharing the road with other drivers.  This is because the intense light could temporarily blind other motorists causing them to miss hazards or important traffic signals. 2) Reduce Your Speed When driving after dark, you will experience limited visibility.  This means that it might take longer for you to recognize road hazards.  By reducing your speed, you are giving yourself enough time to spot danger and respond to it in a safe manner. 3) Increase Your Following Distance If you are driving at night, then it is also important that you create a wider bubble of space between your car and the car that you are following.  This way you have time to react if the driver in front of you suddenly slams on their brakes or employs a surprising driving maneuver to avoid to avoid a hazard or accident situation.  Additionally, following a car further back will allow the driver in front of you to also reduce their speed and drive more cautiously. Try out these three suggestions to help you drive safely at nighttime.
